THE SNELLMAN GROUP and TAG s.r.l. (company of the Boldrin Group) as technological partners in Biomethane in Finland

Fuel oil is no longer used for heating or for steam production at Snellman Ab in Jakobstad. The heat and the steam of the Snellman slaughterhouse waste, fuelled by fuel oil, has been converted to biomethane through TAG srl technologies, replacing an annual consumption of 1 million kilos of fuel oil, thus reducing its CO2 emissions by approximately 3,000 tons/year.

In the spring of 2013, Snellman acquired a 22.5% stake in the Jepua biomethane plant. Just under 20% of the raw material produced by Jepua comes from Snellman; the waste is transported less than 40 km to Jepua by tankers, refined and processed, and then returned again in compressed and bottled biomethane at a pressure of 250 bar in special containers ready to be stored and used through the sophisticated reduction system and regulation carried out by TAG srl, which reduces the extremely high pressure at the appropriate level to feed the production processes of the Jakobstad industrial plant.

Snellman's meat processing is the only food producer in Finland using biomethane which is employed for heating and for the production of steam from production processes.

This is very important for us - says the technical director of the plant - there is a lot of talk about CO2 emissions. By using biomethane, as well as doing good for the environment, we can save almost 30% compared to the previous fuel; by doing so, we expect to amortize the investment made in less than two years.
